Did a major happy dance when I pulled this out of the ground, it was only about 4 inch's down and seems to be in great shape.
Also had to leave a bullet in the ground..... Found a great signal about 20 yards from this plate, went and cleared some shrubs and started to dig not knowing that some ground bee's were about 8 inches from the shovel, one got me good on the temple and 3 others attacked my hat and shirt, I got out of there awful quick! So that one can wait till winter.
Also found a 1892O dime in great condition with the word liberty still on the headband.
Only found 7 bullet though, 5 were shot.
Now if I can only find a Buckle!

That is one good find, I just posted a cuff button i got this weekend. Why i mention it is i live in Wisconsin. So you never know where you can find the civil war stuff. I've found several buttons and one sash plate here so far.

My ship just got underway for the Hurricane Assistance down South (USS Tortuga) and will probably be gone at least a month, so you all do some digging for me.
Free2detect - I retire from the Navy in January and will bemoving back to Western New York, I just hope I can come up with some relics while digging the old homesites back home.
I will still make a monthly/bi-monthly trip back down to Hampton Roads so I can get my relic fix in.

I'll keep you updated on whats going on, we expect to be there by tomorrow morning. Looks like we will be sending supplies up to New Orleans with small boats till they survey the river and fix Nav aids.

Well we've been down here for over two weeks now, my ship (USS Tortuga) moored pierside on the West Bank of New Orleans the Sunday after the Hurricane. We were sent 14 zoidacs with 55 hp motors (a bit large for going through the streets) That next day we sent out people to scout around since we weren't on the command and control map with the National guard. We ended up finding a place in one of the levy breaks to drive/drag our rubber boats through and spent the next few days pulling people out of the flood. Long story short we ran our boats 12 hours a day through the 9th ward and other area's. The water was unbelievably nasty, some places we had to trek through it in our regular Navy boots (it took about 12 days to get us hip waders). The smells and sights both live and dead were worse than you can imagine. Our ship did take in 179 evacuated people and over 80 dogs. If you go to the ship's website www.tortuga.navy.mil (http://www.tortuga.navy.mil) it shows our Camp Milo and Otis, which shows
that with a little imagination anything can happen. But to be totally honest I never thought it would be possible for destruction to happen like that in the United States. This is a serious wake up call for everyone, hurricanes and floods are no joke.
Anyway we are just about done with this mission and will be heading back home to Virginia Beach within a few days, for a bunch of amatuers the kids on the ship did really well. It will be an experience that will always be with me and anyone else involved in the rescue and recovery down here.
I now am starting to get that itch and keep looking around for a metal detector to polish but that will have to wait till I get home to do some relic hunting.
The one picture is me driving one of the zodiaks on the Mississippi, I have a feeling my jon boat will be staying in the garage till next year.
Take Care - Skip
