did not find many paw-paws cause the animals beat me too them. did find 2 fired pistolballs from a nov,1864 skirmish at 5.5" & 5.0" deep. unfired 30-30 round is kind of rare,glad i did not hit it in the wrong spot with my digger.

Nice finds...glad you did not hit wrong too! What are paw-paws? Come from a tree or bush?

they kinda taste like a banana but have big seeds. racoons,opossums,deer etc love them too and always beat me to them but thats ok. comes from a tree that grows in patches. i first heard of them when i was told that cotton top mccoy was killed in a paw-paw patch by the Hatfields during their disagreement.

I can remember going paw paw pickin' with my g'grandpa here in MO.There were two or three groups of trees planted on the family homesite in 1836.Haven't seen any now for a long time,too much developement taken place.Great loss.

MA'S PAW-PAW PIE'S

****MAKE SURE PAW-PAW'S ARE DEAD RIPE****

2 Eggs
2 Cup's of Paw-Paw Pulp (Cooked) and mashed
3/4 to 1 Cup Sugar
1/2 Teaspoon Cinnamon
1/4 Teaspoon Ginger
1/4 Teaspoon Cloves
1-1/2 Cups of milk or light cream

Preheat Oven to 425
Beat Eggs SLIGHTLY and mix with all other ingredients
Pour into unbaked pie crusts
Bake approx. 15 minutes
Reduce Oven to 375
Bake until filling is slightly firm and Bubbling which is approx. 35-45 minutes
Makes 1-9" deep dish pie or 2-8" standard pies.

TOM, If you will go down to Sandstone Falls...Just as you go onto the boardwalk there are several large paw-paw trees at that location. Also if you go directly behind the John Henry Statue on Hwy. 12 at the Greenbrier River there a loads of paw-paw's and just to the North of the Bank at Meadow Creek where I was telling you about is a lot too....PAPPY:smile: :smile: :smile:
