Yesterday Marine03116092 (who hasnt been posting due to major computer problems) and me made a day out of MD'ing. It was the first time for us to hunt together after meeting on this fine site. We went to a place I have on Pvt land that was a northern CW emcampment/Supply dump and also (within the same property) a CW skirmish site (and yes the skirmish lines are still there and look untouched after 150 years with visible trenches). Alittle present background on the place, Its located near New Bern NC. and the encampment/suppy dump is all open land, it has two open 7.5 acre lots and across the road one 2 acre lot that is open and devoid of tree's or tall grass as well. The skirmish line is in a wooded area on the property beside a swampy area.
We hunted this area from 1PM untill 3:30PM when he had to go back to get his son. The grand total for us was, each of us recovered a CW 3 ring bullet, pluss he recoverd a partial of another, and I also recovered a CW pistol ball. Relic wise he made the only find of what looks to be a boot or shoe buckle (we are going to photo this one just for pappy who will probibly know what it is right away).
After we picked up his son, we ventured to the spot he recieved his nickname from. He is a lucky son of a gun, we both dug many coins. The oldest for myself was a 39' Wheaty but no silver . Marine03116092 dug a silver dime and his last swoop of the day recovered a 39' quarter. Needless to say we will be spending alot of time togeather hunting these two sites. Thanks for reading HH

A haversack is a Civil War Pouch worn on the left side and usually contained food....PAPPY:smile:

Hey WeaponUSMC,
Tell AJ (Marine03116092) I said to "get a job" We used to hunt together before I left for Iraq. I should be back from Iraq in Feburary. I have been doing alot of research overhere online, and I know of a couple more sites like the one you were talking about. (near New Bern, and also near Fort Macon) We will have to get together and try them out!! :multi: :multi:

Thanks for the feedback ya'll. and Gunny be safe over there, my unit is there as well right now, not sure when they are getting back but it does stink to be non-deployable and have your unit leave without you. I wanted my 4th and finaly twilight tour over there but the powers above didnt see fit to grant me that. By the time you get back hopefully I'll have Slocum Village cleaned pretty well out and my CW site will still be given up good items. I know the owner pretty well and even made him money by selling acouple of his cars for him (my other passion, Muscle cars). Hopefully I'll be retired by the time you return but I'll have gotting you and AJ permission to keep going out there relic hunting. The owner is real nice and doesnt want anything you might find, he has no intrest in it.

Yes Findlay Ohio is my hometown and where I will be returning to as well once i retire (hopefully next month, or hopefully not now that I have found this great relic spot). Thank you for the invite, I would love to hit some relic spots in WVA. About two blocks from my boyhood home in findlay (parants still own and live in the house) is where Fort Findlay stood. It is right on the bank of the Blanchard river and on our city's mainstreet. Everything near there is paved over, but im going to hit that rivers bank next spring with my MD and see if anything turns up. There is the legend of Fort Findlay about an indian attack (which happened often) where the Commanding Officer burried the pay box, then died durring the battle never to be seen again. HH.....Bill

Glad you got down there safe A.J. This Sat I will be joined by two more fellow MD'ers out on the farm. Im getting out there early starting around 7 or 8 AM and not leaving till the sun goes down. But with 20 some odd acre's to hunt, im sure ill leave you plenty in the ground. After doing much research on CW sites, I have learned that I have thrown away more artifacts thinking they were trash, part of a blown cannon ball, and all those round eyelit things we found turned out to be eyelits from the tents they used in there encampment. Now im becomming more familiar with what im looking for, I wont be making those mistakes again. HH....Bill
