Finally got my camera last week...so here's some of the stuff that I've dug at the old battle field over the past couple of months. The thimbles have me a bit puzzled. Did soldiers use them to mend their own clothes or are they from a latter period?

Thats a very nice collection of bullets:bthumb: That thimble is also very cool and i bet a soldier used it to mend trousers or to change rank insignia patch.. Way to go!

I've been told it is called a 'scabbard tip' used to protect the tip of a bayonet.

First off I like the word "thingy" it can be used to describe many things in the relic subject. What was mentioned before could very well be true, But it also looks like a (Marines close your eyes for not knowing how to spell this) guidon tip, The tip to the battle flags carried into war....HH....Bill

Nice finds. I had heard that there are still some nice relics coming from the Kinston area. The brass "thingy", by my guess, looks like a finial off a cartridge box or cap pouch. Just a guess as there is no size comparison in the pic. On the bottom row of bullets, fourth to last bullet, an Enfield. Does it have any base marking in the cavity? Certain Enfiled marks like "L1" or "55", for example, are worth more. It also looks like ya' got two pieces of "grape" or cannister shot. I'd say you have had some nice digging!

 I think Bill is correct in saying that the Thingy <<<lol is a guidon tip. Just to clarify each regiment carried 2 flags, country flag and regimental colors. The American flag would of had an eagle on the tip so i think that this tip was from regimental colors. Does anybody know what the confederates used on the top of there flag?

NB Digger we're still pullin' a few keepers from these 'hunted out' grounds around KINSTON. The Enfield that I have doesn't have any markings in it that I can make out. How big were "grape" shot? (I knew I should of put something beside 'em for comparison:doh: ). These are about the size of a softball. Wouldn't they be big enough for a cannon ball?

I think ya'll are right about the brass 'thingy' being a flag pole topper. I does have a threaded hole on the bottom.

Yes and no. they are rather big considering where they were found. Could be 6 pounders, but that small gun was phased out by 1864. However, I am pretty sure there is some "grape" about that big. I know some coastal guns had large cal. shot like that (32 pounders) and probably some ships. There was a 100 lbs Parrot gun here in New Bern; at Fort Totten I believe. Awesome finds non-the less! I need to read more about the action up that way. I have been concentrating a bit to hard on New Bern!
