I was fortunate enough to be able to get out and do some diggin’ yesterday. I too, started out by knocking on some doors. Talking with the land owner that owns a few acres across the highway from where the main battle took place. He said, “Sure hunt it all you want.” I thought for certain this would be the spot where that CS plate I’ve been searching for would be! I had about 45 minutes to kill before I met Travis so I made a quick sweep around an old cemetery and slowly made my way towards the woods finding a couple of fired .58 cal three ringers and a few pieces of melted lead.
Once Travis made his way from New Bern, I met him nearby and took him back to my newly acquired spot. We gave it a thorough sweep down. Finding a few more fragments, a Williams cleaner bullet and more melted lead. With not much to show for our efforts we decided to go back across the highway to the hunted out battle field.
We didn’t have much luck there either but it sure was fun looking. Here’s what I ended up with along with a few pics of the battlefield.

Nice Finds Mark! Glad You and Travis were able to swing again and enjoy the mild weather conditions. Just a thought, have you researched to find where the Camps were before the Battle of New Bern? I think these Camps would produce many great finds!

Great Pictures! Keep Swinging & Good Luck, Roger

The CSA camp is protected but the Union came out of New Bern and from the camp site I have been digging over the last few months! But it also a 32 mile trek from there to Kinston and I would presume that the Union troops did not make that in one day. So some where there is a Union camp between New Bern and Kinston. Mark and I are looking....trust me! LOL!
