Here's a bullet I found over the weekend that appears to be carved into a chess piece? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

but I find it strange as to how that bullet is carved. Kinda resembles an over sized crossman .177 pellet used for air guns doesn't it. I have some notes that I copied when I was doing research in Hillsboro that some marksmen would carve their bullets before using them. Anyone ever hear about that? I also found seven different articles mentioning the 4th TX Inf Co E, using bows and arrows on occasion.. Found this rather strange. But then again, if on a recon, it does make sense if you run into sentries.

Hey Mark! I would say it appears to be carved. Can you see any knife/ blade marks down the sides? I am looking at it while at work and my monitor here is sub-par so it is hard to make out details in your pic! Nice find!
Toadie, bullet carving was very common during the War Between the States. Soldiers would make chess pieces, poker chips and all sorts of figures. i have seen one that was carved into an ear of corn. Some of the really detailed carved bullets go for a good deal of money!

Travis, your monitor is fine it's this dang camera:banghead: , but yeah, I can see evidence of knife marks on it where someone has whittled it out. Amazing what those soildiers could do to fight boredom.
