I just got this new piece on Thursday. It is an 8 inch solid shot Columbiad shell. These were used for shore to ship firing during the Civil War. This shell would have been most affective against wood ships or lightly armoured ships. Heavy iron clads would have only been dented by this big boy! It weighs in at a whoping 67 lbs. Note the second pic for a comparison size! Thanks for looking.

Cool find!:bthumb:
Aren't those balls filled with gun powder? Or are they solid?

CW,
This one is a solid shot so powder in it! They did make them with a fuse and powder in order to explode!
I had actually forgotten about this post and am glad that you brought it back up! After some weighing and measuring it looks as if this on is actually a 9 inch solid shot for a Dahlgren naval gun! It wieghs in at about 88 lbs. I was told it wieghed 64 lbs but knew when I picked it up that was not right and led me to second guess it's original identification!
