I just recently got this Civil War cartridge and is a first for me:shock: :yikes: :bthumb: :multi: ! It is a Williams Type III Cleaner cartridge! I have posted a picture of the cartridge and of a Type III bullet (dug) out of cartridge ( it did not come from this rolled cartridge). The pic of the cartridge will be the last time it is ever in the open air again..... or at least as long as I own it!!!!! Unfortunately the air (humidity) and sunlight will ruin a cartridge as pristine as this one.
The Williams Type III cartidges were manufactured in three different colored papers; pink/red, blue, and skin/ brown color. The pink/red being the rarest to find!
The bullet was designed with a zinc made ring/base (see second pic) inserted into the bullet! This ring was supposed to expand upon firing and scrape the barrel to clean it of residue. These bullets are common CW finds! The cartridges are not so commmon!
