I am looking for a map of Beaufort County, NC during the War for Southern Independence. Does anyone know where I can find a good map from the time period? I am particularly looking for a place called Fort Hill. I know it was not a major battle or anything but has anyone seen it listed on a map anywhere? Any help is much appreciated.

Kevin, don't have a map of Fort Hill, but name was changed to Fort Meares in 1863. Was a five gun battery located at State Port across from Campbell Island. HH SabdPitNC

KELVIN,
I am orig. from that area around Wilmington where Ft. Hill or Ft. Meares as it is now called was during the C.W. Ft. Hill was approx.3 miles south of the now existing draw bridge in Wilmington on the Cape Fear River. The fort was located directly across from Campbell Island in the Cape Fear....PAPPY:)

Kelvin,
I looked at 5 Official CW maps made right after the war and saw no sign of the fort on any of the maps of Wilmington. I will say that Pappy's info is probably very accurate and I will look more based on what he said in the above post.
The old Military Atlas is so very inacurate that it does not surprise me there is no mention of it on any of the maps I looked at.

KELVIN, Ft. HILL or MEARES was a very small supported Fort and was part of the "SUGARLOAF" Chain during the C.W.
If you ever make a trip to Carolina Beach,N.C. just as you go over the bridge to the beach, Dow Road runs off to the right.Take Dow Road and go down about 1/4 mile to it's intersection with Charlotte Ave. On the wooded side you can park and walk to the River (Cape Fear) when you reach the River you are at Sugarloaf.
Ft. Meares was really an exchange fort (post) for soldiers groceries and goods....PAPPY:)

KELVIN, I finally located a map here at my house that I have had for some time that shows Ft. MEARES. If you would like a copy of the entire map just PM me with your mailing address and I'll be glad to send it to you.
The picture shown is just a small portion of the map and is from the C.S.A. Engineer Surveys of 1862....PAPPY:)

Thanks everybody for the information. There is one problem though. The info I am looking for is for Fort Hill in Beaufort County. It was located in the Blount's Creek area and was apparently part of the attempt to keep the Yankees from moving north up the Pamlico to take Washington. I just haven't had chance to spend a day in the library to check all the local history and try and find it. I tried this fountain of knowledge here first.:D

Pappy, I would still like a copy of that map you offered though. Many thanks.
