View Full Version : What Rifle Did This Lock Plate Fit?

Was wondering about the positive ID on the rifle this came off. It's very large compared to the Enfield lock plates I've dug. The striking end of the hammer measures almost .50" inside and almost .75 outside. I'm thinking and hoping it to be off the Brown Bess that would have shot some of those .75 round balls I've been digging in this area!
Thanks For Looking & I Appreciate Any Help,
Happy Hunting, Roger

Nice find Roger! I think that is one for Tom H. to answer. I really don't know that much about it! Can you post another pic with that one and an Enfield so I can see the size difference?
Heading out for a dig finally!!!:) :)

Hey Travis! Looks as if You had a great dig today and I'm proud for you! Nothing like slinging some dirt other than slinging dirt to recover some of Our History!!
Showing the comparison with the Enfield! The Lock is about the same size, the hammer is the difference!
Thanks For Looking, Roger
Holding Out On The Finds Today!

Roger,
I see in Crouch's book a very similar lock and hammer. The hammer in his pic is a bit fuzzy but its the cut out section just to the front of the hammer that is identical. He describes the one in his book as being from a European weapon! May be that Brown Bess your looking for!!!
Great find my friend!

Hey Travis,
I do believe you found the missing link! I somehow missed it but you found it for me and it is shown on pg. 90.
Thanks My Friend, Roger
