I have been hunting an area, and these are a few of my finds, can anyone identify any of the finds as civil war.... wondering about the crosses, does anyone have any information on what they were? and have an object I know nothing about....
We are going back and have a question...I hear to be careful on digging in such areas...Tell me what to be careful on digging and if it could be dangerous...was wondering if there might be anything that could be explosive...to me and my friend who will be detecting with me!!! Looking forward to the trip and hope someone can help me out with some of these questions.....found alot of fired bullets.... What range would these be fired from????
Thanks for any help!!!!

Pat,
Nice finds! It looks as though you have a good spot there and it also appears that you have an old site! Could be CW period based on the Eagle button and flat/coin button! Definetly looks like a section of exploded canon ball too!
I am not sure about the crosses though! I'll look through my relic books and see what I can find.
If this is a CW or earlier site then I do not know what the danger would be. It is very very very rare that a canon ball from that period would explode on you!! This only happpens, and still very rarely, when an unexploded shell is being drilled to remove the powder and done improperly!!!! Remember that it has been in the ground a long time and the powder, while still active, would require a high degree of heat or a spark to ignite! Also remember that if you do find a whole shell still treat it carefully and if the ploice find that you have it they will take it and explode it! Wasting an old relic. There are plenty of people out there who know how to take care of live shells for you!
I say " Go forth and dig this place silly!!" Enjoy the hunt, cover the holes and post what you find!

Nice finds Pat!!! It looks like you have found a super place to hunt. The lead appears to be CW musket balls and the eagle definately is CW. Sorry, but I don't know for sure about the cross but I think I've seen one like it before. Someone here should be able to ID it. I do agree with Travis that this place needs "hunted silly" and if you do find a shell intact DON'T DIG IT, IT COULD EXPLODE!!!! Call me and I'll come dig it for ya, LOL. Just kidding. Seriously though, If you did happen to find one in tact (and I pray you do) like Travis said, it should be ok to dig it without any worries. Just don't go being too rough with it until after it's been defused. Good luck at this place and hope to see some more finds from there soon.
HH....

Hey Pat,
Very Nice finds and continued good luck to you & Charlie! Bear in mind that not all artillery shells/balls are explosive! Some were/are solid shots and ONLY the explosive type have/had an attached fuse or fuse hole.
If you dig a complete shell/ball just DON'T whack it with your shovel :D !
Hoping you both have the best time ever digging with many finds to show us here at CW Quest!
Start you a hunting qrid in a place of interest and hunt it slow and over lap your swings from the previous path.
Good Luck, Be Careful On The Road & In The Field, Have Fun, Find Lots, Happy Hunting and Scream OUT LOUD On Those Great Finds! Roger

Had to return to do some more work...and got the next day to do some hunting...Having to make this quick as it is late...Spring break is over and we had a great time...Made 3 trips hunting this week and letting the kids get out and do somethings they enjoyed along with some work...We are leaving in the morning to take my son to see a neurologist and hope he gets a great report... and nothing major going on with him!!!!...(Please say a prayer for him!!!!)
I have a few finds that I turned up and am posting pics very interested in the one that looks like a button...is very heavy???
It says...Taylor & Son and on the bottom Sheffield
Was wondering if anyone knows anything about this item????

Hoping your son is OK! Nice finds Pat! I believe the Taylor & Son came off a hand saw. This piece had a threaded shank at one time and went through the handle on a saw with a slotted nut on the other side.
Continued Good Luck, Happy Hunting, Roger

Thanks Roger, My son got a great report today...but we will be returning to Little Rock for more testing in the near future...MRI and a couple of more tests...He had 2 episodes,,,short term memory loss and nearly passed out at the doc office on us...very scary...not knowing what is going on...I am glad they are checking everything to find out what is going on....I am praying nothing major is wrong with him!!! Thanks again for him!!!
Dectecting sure gets your mind off of some of those things that worry a person!!!!
Thanks for the info on the item...I thought it was to heavy to be a button...Was wondering the age on this and is this one maybe I should ask Pappy about....The other button has a small shield that I can make out on it!!! I was glad to turn it up also...I started looking at the layout of this area I am hunting....at first I was told a home use to stand in this area...I sure am finding lots of fired bullets...and more buttons....Headquarter's were suppose to be in this area somewhere....As I was looking at the layout of the land I can see small indentions in the area and I started detecting farther out and in these indentions I started hitting more lead and iron....Thinking maybe I should set down and do some deep digging to see what is further down there!!! Just wondering if I have found my location and if not boy that is alot of area to cover, but I have plenty of time!!!! Just making the trips is the thing and boy wish it was a little closer!!! lol!!!!!:D
Can't wait to make another trip back!!!!
Thanks again!!!
Hope all is well with you!!!!

PAT, FIRST AND FOREMOST..OUR PRAYERS ARE WITH YOU AND YOUR SON ! We SINCERLY hope that it is nothing seroius.
I agree with Roger in that the item is a emblem off a handsaw. Looks as though you are making some really good finds. The indentations you are speaking of may have been trenches...CHECK THEM OUT REALLY GOOD !
