hi i'm modeling a civil war army in 1/72 and i am wondering what was the most common gun carriage color for confederate cannon and also union cannon.
I have found pictures of cannons with 3 differant color carriages,
dark green,tan,or brown carriages.
so what was the most common?

I would go with the green over all color with black on the metal parts of the carriages with wood on rammers & sponger rods with black on the tips & black buckets. The gun tubes could be black or bronze in color with black on every gun tube (james or Parrot) not a Napolean (these could be mixed.)

The tan was mostly on the big seige gun carriages with black on metal.

I hope this helps.

HI dmacleod66
I would go with what Tom Stelma described as this is the colors that are found on the metal reproduction carriages with authentic tubes in the national parks.
Look at Steen Cannon’s web site of fateful repo CW period of tubes and carriages; they are all painted in this way.

A long time ago I built this model cannon from wood using blueprints of the original 6 and 12 pounder designs and it said that the carriage was painted olive drab and the iron furniture was black.
Hope this helps.

Tom
The 6 inch diameter wheels came off a wine bottle holder made in Mexico that I found in a flea market. The rest of it I made from pieces of a Cantaloupe crate, wooden Dow rods and sheet brass. The barrel is brass lined and has a locking spring loaded firing shank.
