Guys,

That website is my collection and I am in the process of re-identifying several of the listed specimens and adding the correct Thomas and Thomas numbers. I also have more than 100 bullets and 35 or so more cartridges to add.

Please do not consider that website as an authority, the identifications are my best-guesses and several will be changing after re-evaluation based on newly surfaced information.

Thanks,
TomH

Will,

Thanks for the input, it is a work in progress.

I finished reclassifying the .54 cal 3 groove bullets yesterday and hope to have the .577/.58 cal done by the end of the week. Going over all the 3 groove bullets is mind numbing and I am starting to agree with Jim Thomas when he declares "Its just another 3 ringer!!!!!"

here's an odd 3groove .54 cal with a wooden plug. Yah just don't see many of these

Hey TomH,
I've dug one complete drop and a carved one.....MM435 or MM436. I don't have mine in hand at present but I do remember the dropped one having a raised dot in the cavity but NO wooden plug.

Keep Up The GREAT WORK!!
Happy Digging, Roger

Roger,

I have one with the cylinder cavity and a dot but no plug. The plug in this one is firmly stuck in the cavity so I can't tell if there is a dot in the base. The two small holes on the edges of the plug were from where the former owner tried to pry out the plug with no success.

This one was dug in Cold Harbor, VA by legendary relic hunter Wendel Lang.

Folks,

I finally finished re-classifying my bullet and cartridge collection and it is posted at:

http://www.baymediapro.com/collection/

The bullets are now classified primarily by Thomas and Thomas numbers and secondarily by McKee and Mason. All the names are now conforming to the Thomas and Thomas "Handbook", the most accurate reference which reflects Dean and Jim's research through the myriad of documentation.

Let me know if you find any errors in classification and have fun.

Your on line collection has always been a very good reference section and shows some variants that are not mentioned in other sources. Thanks for the good job!

Your 436 is a nice one; I have several of these but they all have more cylindrical cavities without wood plugs.
The T&T Handbook refers to these as Confederate and the only other wooden plug cavity models are the late war Richmond 3 grooved bullets, the so called “salvaged lead”.
Along with Cold Harbor it seems they come out of North Mississippi as well as Northern Georgia.
Do you have an opinion as to where these were manufactured?
