I had a little time this morning and called a property owner near the Battle of Natural Bridge and got permission to do a little detecting. It took some convincing but they agreed so I spent about three hours digging holes.
Sorry about not having something to reference the size but, i'm pretty sure the fragment is a 16 pounder but i'm not sure about the caliber of the bullit. It looks to be slightly larger than a 45. Any ideas?

wa4zfr,

Nice finds. Without measurements and based on profile only I would guess that bullet is a Gallager carbine:

Conventional Gallager:

Jackson's Patent:

Just a guess.

Nice finds, what kind of detector do you have? It's always nice to get into an area that few(or none) hunters have been in. All kinds of goodies to be found. Good luck in your future hunts, gary

I have a Mine Lab Xterra70. It's been interesting learning the thing but I think I have it to where I can tune it up. Now I just have to learn how to interpret it. I learn a little every time I go but, still have a long way

wa4zfr,

I use the Xterra 50 and am nuts about it. I'm amazed at how deep it will go and the minimal weight is a real plus for my achy old shoulders .

Yes, I agree concerning the weight. I'm new to metal detecting and haven't used the others but if their heavier, I think I got the right one. It still takes me a day and a bunch of ice on my elbow, to get over a trip out with it.......but it must be worth it cause I keep going every chance I can.
