I found this a couple days ago while metal detecting along on old road that was used from the early 1800 to early 1900, I posted it on another site that I'm a member of but everyone so far appears to be stumped but excited about this little find. Can anyone tell me something more about it. I first thought it was a general service button till I turned it over an saw that it was a pin. The eagles neck is straight and feathers lifted on the back of head. What do I have here. Help. Thanks KirkTN

I've had some feed back from a couple other long time cw relic men that believe it is original and rare, though it is a bit of a stumper. One of the men is a very avid researcher and said He'd seen the General Service eagle used in other ways than just buttons and that I should hold on to it as it was probably done in small numbers and in his a oppinion was very rare. I'm gonna keep tryin' to research it too but I do like the feed back thus far.:)

Kirk that is way cool........
Now Im an extremely avid Indian Wars era relic hunter, and that eagle on that button is from that time frame. The eagle is a dead give away.I'll research some for you also.
If memory serves me right I remember reading someting a long time ago about these buttons/pins where utilized in the form of a love token, which the bearer of such a love pin button showed her love etc...was in the military.
I've never seen on fashioned like this as a repair job as during this period the Army was now well equiped and supplied. It wasnt like that prior to the Eagle change on the button or I should say change in the entire Army equipage of uniforms in specific until the purge out of surplus Civil War supplies up to that point.
With that said and I hate to start anything, but reirelics is a little off on the date of the pin.The date of January 20th 1854 is true up to a point and that is the fact that,The Infantry button with the letter I in the shield was produced from 1821 until 1854 (General Orders; No. 1A January 20, 1854 in-which the letter I was omitted from the button for Enlisted men.
The general eagle button with the plain shield was then utilized strictly for the Infantry, also keep in mind tho depending on the size of the button the I in the shield was still in use fro Officers up to 1902.(reference page 35 Alberts button book.)
One last thing so no one gets confused is that the letters from the button where dropped on all enlisted mens buttons about the time frame of the original orders of 1854 and eventually by 1855 they where completely dropped.
So with this all Im saying is that the button does not date from 1854,but from about 1872 utnil 1902.That narrows it down for you.And again thats a cool find.Daniel
