dug this yesterday at a old cellar hole site.
it's in real rough shape.domed portion is very thin and hairline cracks where it got pushed in.almost looks like a 3 piece button? there is a thin ring that sets over domed front and goes around rim.a few pieces of this thin ring just crumbled off trying to clean it gently.i just left it alone after that and coated it with hairspray.

all i can make out is 2 words on the backmark reads PALE & CO
Is this a officers staff button or just a post CW general service button?
what a shame it's so damaged :O(

All cannonballs explosive?

Hi, I am with a local historical society. We have a baseball sized cannonball. It is affixed to a homemade wooden base. It has a thick threaded bolt through it to hold it to the base. A hole was drilled to insert the rod/bolt.

I would like to remove it from the base and remove this implanted rod put there by a previous curator. It will take some effort.

My question is if all cannonballs were explosive, my concern is that if not all of the powder was removed, I could cause a spark and this could go bad. Is there any advice?

FYI, I have seen a cannonball called "Shermans calling card" this one is not that big, no visible fuse cover and the only hole is just slightly bigger than a females finger. Just wondering if this was just an impact cannonball.
